Data Centre Resilience: Beyond Redundancy

Technical resilience is essential. Organisational readiness is equally important.

Technical resilience is essential. Organisational readiness is equally important.

Data centres form an increasingly critical part of national infrastructure, supporting essential services, businesses and digital connectivity.

Significant investment is made in redundant power supplies, cooling systems, fire protection and infrastructure monitoring. While these systems are fundamental to operational reliability, technical redundancy alone cannot guarantee resilience.

A major incident may involve multiple simultaneous failures, complex dependencies, incomplete information and decisions extending beyond normal engineering operations.

During these situations, organisations must be capable of coordinating technical response, managing strategic consequences, communicating effectively and establishing clear recovery priorities.

Critical questions include:

  • Are escalation thresholds and decision-making responsibilities clearly defined?
  • Can technical response teams and executive crisis management teams operate effectively together?
  • Have realistic scenarios tested the organisation's ability to manage cascading failures?
  • Are recovery arrangements understood, achievable and regularly validated?

True data centre resilience requires the integration of engineering reliability, emergency preparedness, crisis leadership and business continuity.

Northstar supports critical infrastructure operators in assessing these capabilities and strengthening their preparedness for major operational disruption.
